FREDSROCKART.COM's Vision: Art that Speaks to the Soul

Camp Carvarock is a name I came up with after attending Burningman. It is located on family property in Upper Ojai, Ca. Only one other house could look down upon me. It was just me and the hawks and the lizards. 

I had direct sunlight from early in the morning until the typically spectacular sunset at the end of the day. The site is about 15 miles to the coast. On hot days the cool breeze kept me inspired.

I do all my carving by hand, using traditional Italian hammers and chisels. To finish I use Italian made rifflers and sandpaper. 


The process is slow, but I need that much time to evaluate my work. If I worked any faster I'd make mistakes. 


Each rock has something in it. It's my job to carefully remove the stone that's covering the inhabitant. I don't know what it is until the rock tells me that I'm

It took a few years, but in time I had a completely self sufficient studio. It even had a kitchen and a protected garden where I grew fruit and tomatoes.


I'd start my day with a cup of coffee and a bagel. That gave me a chance to live with my rocks for a half hour before getting started. 


The oddest things would inspire me. From a small picture in the paper, to an epiphany as to what hid inside one

Everything changed on December 4th, 2017. The Thomas Fire started a few hundred yards from out property line. 


Within minutes my brother Charlie and I were in preservation mode. Our family home was the priority. I knew the fire was heading straight for my studio, but I couldn't leave the house. 


We saved our house while watching our neighbors' homes burn to the ground. It was a tragic day. A tragic

I loved my F250. We had a lot of good times together and saw a lot of America. We also brought a lot of limestone back from Kansas. 


The fire spared nothing. 70 mph winds with a humidity of 2 was a recipe for disaster. Charlie and I spent the night circling our home as embers flew in every direction. If I could have gotten away for 15 minutes I could have save my truck and a lot of my tools. My sto
