ITALIAN MARBLE GALLERY - Hand-carved marble portraits
The marble used for these sculptures came from the Carrara region of Italy. The best sculpture stone in the world, or so Michelangelo thought. The crystalline structure of this marble, (which is seen shimmering in the background image) is uniform in most directions, allowing a sculptor to design figures with little fear of finding hidden flaws or weaknesses. This stone also has an amazing combination of strength and softness - it is strong enough to hold fine detail, even thin fingers, yet soft enough to carve away by hand with soft hammers and tempered steel chisels. It is truly a joy to create art in this stone.
